Wellbeing Wednesday: How scents can boost your mood in winter months

wellbeing wednesday winter months scents

Now the clocks have gone back, and the nights are getting darker, it's easy to feel the winter blues creeping in. Many people find they suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), and find themselves feeling a little lower than usual with less sunshine and shorter days. For this week's Wellbeing Wednesday, we're exploring the benefits of aromatherapy, and how you can shift the gloom caused by the dark nights and colder weather.

Aromatherapy has long been used to help calm or enhance your mood, and using the power of scents can be a really effective way of beating the winter blues. What's important is that you choose the right essential oil for the mood you're seeking to create.

Well known as one of the most calming scents, lavender has incredible relaxation properties. Whether it's helping you unwind or letting you enjoy a better night's sleep, lavender is perfect for when you're feeling stressed and need to relax and relieve feelings of anxiety. Try our signature scent, Serene, a calming blend of lavender to geranium designed to help you unwind.

Citrus (bergamot, orange, grapefruit and lime)
Natural mood enhancers, citrus oils are great for giving you a much needed boost. They're revitalising scents that help to increase physical and mental energy levels, as well as reducing feelings of anxiety and irritability. Try Evocative, a sensual blend of Mexican lime and cinnamon, the perfect warming scent for these winter months. Or try one of our lemon and orange based scents like Frivolous and Revive. Frivolous is a refreshing blend of Sicilian lemon, bergamot, sweet orange, ginger and clove; and Revive is an uplifting citrus blend of natural grapefruit, orange, lemon and bergamot, perfect for when you need a pick me up.

While it's not as popular as lavender for providing a moment of calm, cedarwood has amazing properties to help relieve stress and anxiety. The soothing woody scent is perfect for this time of year to create a cosy and calming atmosphere. Right now it's not part of our signature scents - but keep your eyes peeled for an exclusive, Christmas limited edition coming soon!

Much like cedarwood and lavender, peppermint is used to soothe the soul. Naturally calming, it's used to promote relaxation and its refreshing scent has been shown to improve alertness and even memory. We'll soon be launching our exclusive Durham blend, Old Elvet created for Hotel Indigo Durham, a fragrant blend of lavender, rosemary and peppermint.

Whether you're looking to enhance your mood or relax, our range of signature scents focus on elevating or calming your current state of mind.
